Essay Exercise: AI Controversy

The Prompt

“The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in the creative arts—from writing to visual design—has sparked intense debate. While some view it as a tool for democratization and efficiency, others fear it undermines human creativity and copyright integrity.”

Write an essay discussing the potential benefits and drawbacks of AI in creative fields. Conclude by suggesting how society might balance technological progress with the protection of human artists.

The essay

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in creative field has always been controversial. It is used for creating any form of creative work, including writing, music, and design. The ability to do the creative work may influence business owners to replace labors with AI. As a result, some artists called boycotts to protect artistic integrity and human creativity. Moreover, AI is trained by publicly available real data that generates the ability to copy artworks. Some artists complained that AI can clone their art style and make a new one from it.

However, AI work result is still imperfect, human intervention is still needed to operate the AI to ensure the quality of work produced. Thus, the adoption of AI in creative work is not replacing the human, it boosts productivity. AI could be a useful tool as many people are using AI to brainstorm ideas. On the other side, AI companies should comply to copyright integrity and not scraping or using protected entity.

Taking everything into account, artists must have a balance between using tools for creative advancement while remaining authentic and ethical.

Structure fix

Introduction:

  • Hook: AI is controversial
  • Thesis: While AI offers productivity benefits, it poses a significant threat to copyright and employment stability

Body:

  • Point: Job displacement and copyright theft
  • Evidence: AI is trained on scraped data
  • Result: Artists are boycotting

Body 2:

  • Point: AI is a tool, not a replacement
  • Evidence: It requires human intervention/prompting
  • Result: It boosts productivity rather than erasing the artist.

AI Improved version

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the creative field has sparked intense controversy. While technology is now capable of generating music, writing, and design, it has raised fears that business owners may prioritize efficiency over human talent. Ultimately, while AI serves as a powerful tool for productivity, I argue that it requires strict ethical regulation to protect artistic integrity.

The primary concern surrounding AI is the potential for economic displacement and copyright infringement. Specifically, AI models are trained on vast datasets of publicly available images, giving them the ability to mimic an artist’s unique style without consent. Consequently, this has led to widespread boycotts by creators who feel their intellectual property is being exploited to train the very machines that might replace them.

Conversely, proponents argue that AI is an instrument for augmentation, not replacement. Since AI-generated outputs are often flawed or generic, human intervention remains indispensable to ensure quality and emotional resonance. Thus, for many professionals, AI acts as a sophisticated brainstorming partner that accelerates workflows rather than eliminating the need for human input.

Taking everything into account, the rise of AI is inevitable. However, to ensure it aids rather than hinders creativity, companies must comply with copyright laws and stop scraping protected data. Artists must strike a balance: leveraging these tools for efficiency while fiercely guarding the human element of their craft.
