Quarter Life Crisis

Quarter life crisis is typically happened to young people aged 18-30, described as a person who missing their life compass, raising insecurity and doubts regarding their future, career, relationship, and financial stability.

I think it’s because when we’re a teenager, we have tangible milestones within reach. Getting a good score on exams, move to new grade each year, new school every few years, finishing your thesis, and finally got your first job. After few years working on your job, life seems pretty stagnant.

Once you hit the age 25, that litte stair-steps are flattened. You’re no longer seeing the visible tread in front of you. You are clueless. What you do every single day is just to wake up, cook a breakfast, going to work until evening, and get back to sleep. “Am I just going to work, to pay the bills and rent, for the next 50 years?”

Some people lost their purpose and dreams before they even graduated. Some are finding a hard time to get a job.

The reason why we always need more is because:

  1. Lack of gratitude
  2. Your brain always seek challenges and novelty because it’s rewarding. It releases dopamine each completion. Getting a good grade, exam, and graduation is a clear dopamine hit. Your brain interprets “no challenges” as “no future.”
  3. The social media sets how the society should be. You’re constantly comparing yourself with others.
