Why Monks Don't Marry and Islam Perspective
Monks choose celibacy as spiritual practice, which means abstaining from sexual and romantic relationships.
It doesn’t mean monks don’t love anyone. Monk’s love is equal, unconditional and universal compassion for all living beings.
They think engaging in worldly ties and being attached to someone may alleviate the probability of suffering, jealousy, and grief.
Life is simpler because no family obligations.
No romantic ties = freedom to serve, travel, and dedicate fully to God.
Islam takes a different approach
- Islam does not have monks
- Marriage is encouraged, even The Prophet said “Marriage is half of faith”
Furthermore, Islam has rules for gender interaction:
- No physical contact for unrelated man and woman
- Lowering the gaze
- No khalwa, a man and woman must never be alone together in private
- Hijab, women cover themselves and men cover modestly
