Why We're Sleepy After Eating Sugar?

When we eat sugar, blood sugar spikes. Pancreas releases insulin to absorb sugar for energy and suppress blood sugar level. We call this ‘sugar crash’ that causes fatigue because of energy fluctuations.

We will feel sluggish as the body processes the sugar influx and balance the hormones. Sugar influx = rapid entry of sugar into the bloodstream.

Sugar consumption releases serotonin (hormone for mood regulation and relaxation). High level of serotonin increases calmness and potentially contribute to drowsiness.

When the amount of glucose surpasses what is needed for energy, it will be transferred to muscles, liver, fat cells and stored for later use. That’s why eating a lot of sugar will make you fat.
